Glycyrrhizin-induced Inhibition of the Pituitary-adrenal Stress Response
Glycyrrhizin decreased the resistance of intact male mice to prolonged exposure to cold (8 hours at 5 degrees C.) and it decreased the ability of intact male rats to mobilize glucose when subjected to 48 hours of fasting. It is suggested that glycyrrhizin, like desoxycorticosterone, depresses the output of ACTH.
متن کاملLeptin inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in response to stress.
Leptin is a newly identified protein hormone that is synthesized and secreted by adipose tissue. Absence of the mature hormone is responsible for the obese phenotype of ob/ob mice. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) is activated in ob/ob mice, and chronic administration of leptin to ob/ob mice decreases plasma corticosterone levels, suggesting that the adipose hormone is capable of ...
متن کاملStress-induced sensitization: the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and beyond.
Exposure to certain acute and chronic stressors results in an immediate behavioral and physiological response to the situation followed by a period of days when cross-sensitization to further novel stressors is observed. Cross-sensitization affects to different behavioral and physiological systems, more particularly to the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. It appears that the nature of...
متن کاملEffect of glycyrrhizin on the suppressive action of cortisone on the pituitary adrenal axis.
The effects of glycyrrhizin on the pituithry adrenal axis were studied. Isolated rat anterior pituitary glands were incubated with 14C-phenylalanine and biosynthetic activity of corticotropin in the pituitary was estimated. The rate of incorporation of radioactivity from 14C-phenylalanine into corticotropin fraction in the rat anterior pituitary was increased specifically by prior adrenalectomy...
متن کاملHypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal axis and stimulatory G proteins signaling role in nociceptive changes induced by forced swim stress
Introduction: Different mechanisms are involved in stress induced analgesia (SIA) and hyperalgesia (SIH). Repeated stress induces development of tolerance to SIA. The role of HPA axis and Gs signaling pathway in these effects are investigated in the current study. Methods: Forced swim stress (5 min/day) in water (20±1 ºC) was employed to adult male Wistar rats (200-250 g). The nociceptive t...
